Regular Goods: Bananas. Corn. Phones. Sardines. Daily objects that make up our lives. Nicole Dyer and E. Saffronia Downing play with the boundary between painting and sculpture by re-thinking the object as painting, and painting as object.
E. Saffronia Downing molds her sculpture through notions of femininity, sexuality, and childhood, leaving the mark of her body on each piece. Ceramic fruit and vegetables are the building blocks of work that expresses the kinship between body and vessel.
Nicole Dyer’s paintings are a visual recording of the primal, sensual, and sometimes violent need to be with others. A plate of food can be both nourishing and dangerous; a beautiful moment can be over in an instant, yet preserved forever through social media.
E. Saffronia Downing (b. 1992) was born and raised in Baltimore, MD. She received a BA from Hampshire College in 2014 in Studio Art and Women’s History. Downing has recently completed residencies at Haystack Mountain School of Crafts in Deer Isle, ME, and Mall of Found Residency in New Lebanon, NY.
Nicole Dyer (b. 1991) is an artist currently based in Baltimore, MD. She graduated from the Maryland Institute College of Art in 2013 with a BFA in Drawing. Dyer has shown in several two person and group shows including “Wide Eyed” at Savery Gallery (Philadelphia), “Phantom Limb” at Guest Spot (Baltimore), and “Sad Intentions” at LVL 3 (Chicago). She has exhibited internationally at the Burren College of Art in Ireland, where she studied in 2012. In 2017 she was a recipient of an Elizabeth Greenshields Grant. Dyer most recently completed a three month residency at the Wassaic Projects in Wassaic, NY.

Annually, the Young Lawyers Section (YLS) of the Maryland State Bar Association hosts a charity event attended by approximately 200 members of the bench and bar to benefit a local charity. The YLS’s 27th Annual Spring Charity Event will be held on Friday, April 20, 2018 from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at Gertrude’s, located at 10 Art Museum Drive, Baltimore, MD 21218. The event will include hor d’oeuvre stations, oyster shucking, an open bar, live music, and a silent auction. Our goal is to raise $20,000 for the Oyster Recovery Partnership (ORP), this year’s charity, to support their environmental education program for youth! Join the YLS at its biggest event of the year!
ORP was established in 1994 to build and strengthen cooperative oyster restoration efforts among state and federal government agencies, scientists, watermen, and conservation organizations, resulting in a coordinated, focused, large-scale restoration program. ORP believes that shellfish, such as oysters, are critical to reversing the Chesapeake Bay’s poor water quality and declining habitats and expanding economic opportunities in the Chesapeake and Coastal Bays and beyond. ORP collaborates with schools and other organizations to deliver educational services to students on the Chesapeake Bay, its ecosystem, and the important role we all play in the Bay’s overall recovery.

Our biggest event of the year-Greener Fest-is back. Featuring two can drops, three bars with draft beer, food trucks, outdoor games, kid friendly activities, and live music, this event embraces everything our team enjoys with even more to offer than last year. Mark your calendars.
THE LOCATION:
Greener Fest will take place in our taproom, our new patio space, and will overflow into our parking lot on April 21st, 2018. Can drops will start at 11AM and the full festival begins at 12PM.
THE BEER:
We have a dual can release for you this year, with more details on limits, prices, and logistics to come. More importantly, we will be offering a way to reserve your cans for pick-up after the festival or the following day. This way, we can ensure your cans stay fresh and cold in our cooler. Here are the details on the two beers:
(1) Greener Machine (Imperial IPA) is our imperial version of Green Machine with an extra dose of Citra and Ella hops throughout the brewing of the beer.
(2) Cold Taxi (Zwickelbier) is our unfiltered lager, dry-hopped with Vic Secret and Mosaic. Inspired by old world lagers, while providing our own spin on the style.
THE MUSIC:
Music returns this year, taking place on our patio featuring two incredible local bands, The High and Wides (early afternoon session) and Ampersand Stringband (late afternoon session).
THE FOOD:
El Gringo Taco truck and Smoke BBQ will be slinging Mexican and American options all day. In addition, we’ll be stopping the festival during mid-afternoon to thank everyone and invite 10 guests on stage for an eating competition involving two tacos, one chaco taco ice cream, and a 16oz chug of our Cold Taxi Zwickelbier.
KID’S ZONE SPONSORED BY Porter Street Apartments – Baltimore, MD:
As a family friendly environment, we enjoy seeing adults showing up to imbibe, and look forward to kids enjoying our festival as well. Porter Street Apartments will have a bounce house and face painting available in the parking lot

“Brübakes” is a new event that unites Homebrewers and Bakers in a single competition to celebrate Spring, Earth Day, sustainable brewing practices, and the DIY spirit! Brewers must design a Belgian-style Saison ale to be served with a baked good. The catch? Bakers are required to use spent grain from the brewers’ mash (at least 10% by weight) to create their counterpart. Entries will be judged *as a pair* by the attendees for 1st and 2nd place prizes (valued at $25 per competitor). Those who are up for the challenge may act as both brewer and baker. Competitors must bring enough of each product for 60 samples. Ticket proceeds will be used to fund future Baltibrew events, gatherings, and charitable donations throughout the year.
Saison is a fairly broad style of Strong Belgian Ale that is easy to brew in a short period without precise temperature control – which means it’s great for homebrewers! We encourage creative recipes, and believe the best way to ensure your brew tastes authentic is by using a true Saison yeast (easily found at your local homebrew store). Key highlights from the BJCP guidelines are pasted below for reference.
“Overall Impression: Most commonly, a pale, refreshing, highly-attenuated, moderately-bitter, moderate-strength Belgian ale with a very dry finish. Typically highly carbonated, and using non-barley cereal grains and optional spices for complexity, as complements the expressive yeast character that is fruity, spicy, and not overly phenolic. Less common variations include both lower-alcohol and higher-alcohol products, as well as darker versions with additional malt character.
Characteristic Ingredients: Not typically spiced, with the yeast, hops and grain providing the character; but spices are allowed if they provide a complementary character. Continental base malts are typical, but the grist frequently contains other grains such as wheat, oats, rye, or spelt. Adjuncts such as sugar and honey can also serve to add complexity and dry out the beer. Darker versions will typically use richer, darker malts, but not typically roasted types. Saazer-type, Styrian or East Kent Golding hops are commonly used. A wide range of herbs or spices can add complexity and uniqueness, but should always meld well with the yeast and hop character. Brettanomyces is not typical for this style; Saisons with Brett should be entered in the American Wild Ale category.
Entry Instructions: The entrant must specify the strength (table, standard, super) and the color (pale, dark). *Fruit and/or spice additions (optional) must be identified, as well.*
Vital Statistics:
OG: 1.048 – 1.065 (standard)
FG: 1.002 – 1.008 (standard)
IBUs: 20 – 35
SRM: 5 – 14 (pale), 15 – 22 (dark)
ABV: 3.5 – 5.0% (table), 5.0 – 7.0% (standard), 7.0 – 9.5% (super)”
Full style guidelines can be found here (p50-51): https://www.bjcp.org/docs/2015_Guidelines_Beer.pdf
Note: In order for bakers to serve fresh goods, brewers should freeze their spent grain so that bakers can thaw before use. Any intentional souring of grain should be done in a clean, sealed container and kept to a maximum of 12 hours before freezing to maintain proper food safety standards. Grains may also be oven-dried before storing.
1st place: $25 gift card to The Wine Source (per competitor)
2nd place: $25 gift card to Peabody Heights Brewery (per competitor)
Tickets will be limited to 50 attendees and 12 competitors. Additional donations for club funding will be accepted during the event (contributions or gifts to Baltibrew are not tax deductible).
