The BRESCO trash burning incinerator has been Baltimore’s way of dealing with our regions’ waste for decades creating a toxic reliance that costs lives. Communities of color and low income in South Baltimore are the unwilling hosts for BRESCO, the city’s worst air polluter, along with the city’s landfill and the nations’ largest medical waste incinerator. One pollutant from BRESCO alone costs residents $55 million a year in health damages. Baltimore’s failed and unjust past cannot become its future.

This is why residents came together and started to not only understand the problem but took on the challenge to find alternatives to move past this outdated way of dealing with our precious and limited natural resources. We, as residents, students and workers created Baltimore’s Fair Development Plan for Zero Waste along with a team of leading national experts. City officials took notice, followed our lead and adopted the Zero Waste plan as a priority measure to respond to the Covid-19 pandemic that brought the need for a just transition away from toxic air pollution into sharper focus.

With communities and labor, along with new city leadership centered on restoring trust and building equity, we have an historic opportunity to create a zero waste system built around the needs of communities, workers and our environment.

Together, on April 22nd, we are proud to hold Baltimore’s very first Annual Zero Waste Day to mark a turning point following Baltimore’s choice to leave behind a system focused on burning and burying our limited natural resources. Join us to truly make this Baltimore’s just transition for Zero Waste.
