Fractured Families: Today we discuss two films examining the complex nature of family relationships.

  • STORIES WE TELL (2012)
Actress-turned-director Sarah Polley’s film excavates layers of myth and memory to find the elusive truth at the core of a family of storytellers. Stories We Tell was an Official Selection at Venice Film Festival, Sundance Film Festival, and Toronto International Film Festival. Click here to watch the trailer.
  • SHOPLIFTERS (2018)
    In Japanese with English subtitles
Like Yasujiro Ozu, Japanese director Hirokazu Kore-eda’s films are concerned primarily with family relationships and in Shoplifters he contemplates not only what makes a family but the place of the family in society as a whole. Shoplifters tells the story of a non-biological family of small-time crooks who take in a child they find on the streets and raise as their own, finding happiness and meaning despite a life of poverty. The film won the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival and was nominated for an Oscar and a Golden Globe award as Best Foreign Film. Click here to watch the trailer.
