Virtual – Zoom

Film Fridays with Tom & Gillian provides a virtual community space facilitated by Enoch Pratt librarians to gather and discuss chosen films. All the titles we are showing will be available from Kanopy or Hoopla, which patrons can access using their Enoch Pratt library card.

Holiday Dressings: Join us today as we discuss two films that examine alternative and non-traditional aspects of the holiday season.

  • JINGLE BELL ROCKS!: THE UNDERGROUND WORLD OF ALTERNATIVE CHRISTMAS MUSIC (2013)
It’s hard to go anywhere during the holidays without hearing the sounds of all-too-familiar Christmas music. That’s why director Mitchell Kezin takes a look at the flipside of traditional holiday music, exploring offbeat alternative records that address everything from racial inequality and religious freedom to nuclear war and even just “the sadness of being alone at the happiest time of the year.” Featuring our own John Waters, The Flaming Lips, Run-DMC, Miles Davis, Clarence Carter, and many more. • BLACK FRIDAY (1974)
The college town of Bedford is receiving an unwelcome guest this Christmas. As the residents of sorority house Pi Kappa Sigma prepare for the festive season, a violent stranger begins to stalk the house. Though he later became famous for directing another holiday classic, A Christmas Story, Bob Clark’s Black Friday was arguably the first “slasher” film and established many of the now-familiar tropes associated with the genre. It was remade for television in 2006 and again in 2019. The cast includes Keir Dullea, John Saxon and Margot Kidder. Winner of Best Performance by a Lead Actress (Olivia Hussey) and Best Editing at the Canadian Film Awards. Nominated for Best Horror Film from the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy & Horror Films. Nominated for Best Motion Picture at the Edgar Allan Poe Awards. Click here to watch trailer.
