Let’s welcome the Spring with a blooming discussion of the budding yet thorny relationship between Romeo Montague and Juliet Capulet. Timeless in its themes and inspiring a wealth of adaptations, this play is unique in the canon for joining magnificent language (exemplified by the sonnet making up the first interaction between the title characters) with heart-wrenching tragedy. In addition to the staged versions, this play has inspired a ballet by Prokofiev, film versions by Franco Zeffirelli and Baz Luhrmann, an opera by Bellini (highly recommended – I Capuleti e i Montecchi), and of course West Side Story.
