Giving parents a choice. Giving children a chance.
“Children’s Scholarship Fund Baltimore (CSFB) is a privately funded organization providing partial scholarships to low-income families in Baltimore City, helping them afford the cost of tuition at the private school of their choice. The program is intended as a helping hand for families enrolling their children at a private school for the first time.
Our model of providing partial-tuition scholarships to low-income families is one of the simplest, most immediate and effective ways to educate children and empower families to break the cycle of poverty. In Baltimore City, there are hundreds of empty seats in private schools – schools which lead to graduation rates of more than 97%. We can fill those seats.”

Hosted by The Life and Breath Foundation
Cocktail attire with “resort casual” accents, i.e. flip flops
The Life and Breath Foundation invites you to celebrate the last full night of summer with spectacular sunset views of the harbor, entertainment and more while supporting a great cause.
Its 10th annual signature fundraiser, Flip Flop Festivus, takes place Friday, Sept. 21 – the night before the Fall Equinox –from 6:30 to 11:30 p.m., at the Four Seasons Hotel Baltimore in Harbor East.
A repeatedly sold out event with over 300 guests, Flip Flop Festivus offers an elegant night on the town in a resort casual atmosphere. Past attendees have included former professional athletes and media personalities such as Qadry Ismail, Brad Jackson, Gheorghe Muresan, Harvey Grant, Walt Williams, David Aldridge and Johnny Holliday.
Taking place in the hotel’s Cobalt Ballroom, this year’s event will feature sumptuous cuisine and cocktails, along with casino games, raffle prizes and an exciting live auction of highly sought-after sports and travel packages. Guests also can dance to the sounds of DJ Lyndon “Smoky” Lansdowne from The Starboard in Dewey Beach, who is now celebrating his 30th anniversary as a DJ.
“We’re excited to reach the decade mark with Flip Flop Festivus,” said Sean Hull, president of the Life and Breath Foundation. “This event annually brings the community together for a night filled with great music, amazing food creations and dancing, and this year will be our best ever!”
Hull established the Life and Breath Foundation after losing his mother (at age 59) to Sarcoidosis following her 13-year struggle – as there is no cure for the disease.
Proceeds from Flip Flop Festivus will enable the Foundation to fund additional research, as well as to assist patients, their family and the medical community in handling Sarcoidosis.
Individual tickets are $125 per person and corporate sponsorships are also available. For tickets, sponsorship or volunteer information, visit www.lifeandbreath.org or call 1-866-4SUPPRT or 410-750-8808.
Founded in 1998, the Life and Breath Foundation’s mission is to provide the Sarcoidosis community with the vital resources needed to manage their medical care and to offer a supportive environment where they can be empowered. Since its inception, it has raised over $350,000 for Sarcoidosis research studies.

Benefits Believe in Music
Baltimore’s music scene deserves some celebration. Over the past decade, it has evolved into a dynamic, diverse, and potent melting pot of musical talent, sealing Charm City’s status as a music city to watch. And we couldn’t agree more. That’s why we dedicated our Mayissue entirely to covering some of the Baltimore’s most exceptional musicians who create the soundtrack of this city. And since you can’t have a music issue without a party, why not throw a big one?
Join Baltimore magazine and Union Craft Brewing at the brand-new Union Collective on September 22 for a Music Festival with a line-up you won’t want to miss featuring:
Baltimore is proud to partner with Believe In Music as the event beneficiary of the Music Festival. Hosted by Maryland Institute College of Art
As, Not For is an incomplete historical survey of work created by African-American graphic designers over the last century. These practitioners are absent in too many classroom lectures, and their methods mostly invisible or uncredited in the field. This exhibition aims to promote the inclusion of neglected Black designers and their developed methodologies and challenge the ubiquity of White and anti-Black aesthetics in our designed world.
The exhibited works are printed ephemera, all of which are authentic representations of Black culture in the time that they were created. Each work is reproduced and uniformly scaled—in solidarity— to 24’’ x 36” posters printed on sheets of resilient styrene. The exhibit seeks to question, inspire, activate, and challenge the design community and beyond with the objective of promoting deep history, design theory and aesthetics of African-Americans. As, Not For is organized by Graphic Design Teaching Fellow Jerome Harris under the direction of department Chair Brockett Horne, and advised by Mark Sanders.
Opening reception for As, Not For takes place in the Bronze Gallery, Brown Center. This event is free and open to the public. This exhibition is on view through September 30, 2018.
