Join AIA Baltimore, the Baltimore Architecture Foundation and the architectural community for the 2019 AIA Baltimore Excellence in Design Awards Celebration. The Excellence in Design Awards promotes and publicizes the work of AIA Baltimore members throughout our region and recognizes Baltimore Architecture Foundation Golden Griffin and Roger Redden Award recipients.

This year’s design awards will be held at the 1996 Design Award-winning Columbus Center. The event will include heavy hors-d’oeuvres, beer and wine, and a great opportunity for networking and celebrating outstanding design and collaboration.

About the Venue

Completed in 1995 and designed by Zeidler Roberts Partnership, the Columbus Center was built as a national center for marine biology research and education to bridge the scientific community and the public. Architect Eberhard H. Zeidler described its signature Teflon roof as an “amorphous sea form” resembling both a sailing ship and a sea creature. The building originally called for a “Hall of Exploration”—a marine biology themed hall with exhibits designed by Brian Ferren, the head of Disney Imagineering. Today, the Columbus Center is home to the Institute of Marine and Environmental Technology (IMET), a joint University System of Maryland research institute.
