Girls of Spring

Every year when it gets warmer outside we think of lightening up our routine and new ways to add something fresh. Anything to wake us up from the past month’s crazy Baltimore weather! As someone who prides himself on being a bit of a know-it-all on this topic, I was delighted to pop into Whole Foods Mount Washington and find something fresh I never heard of.

W3LL PeopleGo-to spots like Whole Foods and Mom’s Organic are starting to amp up their color offerings as more traditional retailers are now offering full-fledged natural-based lines that would put a MAC counter to shame, and they’re greener. W3LL People is made in small batches to insure the most safe and effective 100% natural ingredients are sourced, filling a rapid rising category referred to as “Eco Luxe.”

Another category piggybacking often including “Eco Luxe ” is “Athleisure,” which refers to natural looking – and feeling – cosmetics that give off a no-makeup easy, youthful look. Our rising model Brigid Kratfel is a perfect example of how a natural-looking makeup routine isn’t necessarily using a natural-based product. Here she’s wearing just a touch of BB cream, mascara, and the new Smashbox frosted red lip lacquer that proves going from day to night is easy when you have great skin and keep the rest simple.

Staying young forever would be great, but I couldn’t help celebrating the 35th birthday of Heidi Klotzman – of Heidnseek Entertainment – at new hotspot, Citron of Quarry Lake. Here she is, on the right, modeling a big spring trend of seafoam colored eyes with bronze cheeks, nude frost lips, and strong brows – a more wearable Cleopatra throwback that is more flattering than you might think. With her is Sarah Tzomides, the new host of Network Under 40 kicking off this week. Sarah went the opposite direction in a LuLu dress, Kat Von D matte taupe-y lip stain and Benefit They’re Real liner and mascara.

Something girls have always – and will always – want more of – long lashes. I caught my friend, cinematographer (and sometimes client) Luba Gershenzon at the Mycity4her tenth anniversary party at Mt. Vernon Wine and Spirits. She was fresh from a makeup and lash application at Sephora Towson, wearing spring frosted nude shadows, with a healthy dose of lashes and liquid liner balanced by a subtle matte nude lip and a bit of icon Nars “Laguna” bronzer.

Lest we think the girls are having all the fun, I took a moment for myself to pop in the Brooks Brothers’ open house in their new Harbor East store and rediscovered some treasured vintage colognes, that even the Kennedy brothers were known to wear in the 60’s. The best part about these – like Bay Rum and Royal Rugby – is they’re a preppy throwback that are not only so retro, but they’re surprisingly light and wearable. I can see why Tom Ford has been onto something, but these are one-third the investment and a bit lighter. Think of them as a wearable summer tonic splash!

That’s it for this time. But, check back in two weeks for my new personal “secret weapon” for looking younger (honest to God!) without breaking the budget – a little something I discovered at the new Ulta grand opening in Foundry Row.
