Face Value: Summer Sizzles

Summer has its own makeup challenges, and I was put to the test at the recent HeidnSeek and Green Spring Station social media influencer bash. We had a few models who would be strolling through the crowd in outfits from Station shops, so I knew their makeup had to not just look great but stand up to toasty temps!

Trina Fernandez Epps – showcasing Panache – showed off her dewy skin with BB cream and bronzer…

…and a deep berry gloss lip that pulls a little red with her undertones, and a light smokiness around her eyes done mostly with a kohl pencil and cream shadow.

Local bridal model Heather Greenberg modeled for lingerie shop Necessary Secrets.

To deal with her summer “glow” (ladies don’t perspire, you know!), we used various shades of Pressed Mineral Powder to cover, contour, and brighten her face over a mattifying primer. Heather has great brows and gorgeous lashes, so a bright pink gloss and waterproof liner and mascara were about all she needed. Tip: we took the pressed mineral bronzer and rubbed it on her lids to act as a sweat-proof shadow in a hurry.

For longtime pro dancer and former model Donna Siegel modeled the offerings of Boutique W, where she also works. With her strong eyes and hairdo, her makeup artist Greg focused on evening out her skin and making her features pop with her short hair. Donna isn’t afraid of a bright pink lipstick, so this was actually more subdued than her usual “Baltimore Barbie” style.

I was so complimented when portrait photographer Lisa Shifren asked me to do her makeup for her own portraits recently in Mt. Washington. She doesn’t like much on her skin – a must for photography – and hesitates to use it on herself. But, she actually loves color and told me to do whatever would be best for photos. I did some contouring with bronzer, so her cherub-like face stood out. Then, I used a bit of an off-pink and off-blue on her eyes and lips. Basically, it’s just bright colors mixed with a little brown to give the look of wearing something colorful without screaming it.

Rachael Bartok was already aglow with excitement over the 30th birthday party she was throwing at Barcocina for longtime boyfriend John when I arrived to do her makeup. Because she was wearing a light peach dress and was sporting new blonde highlights, I went with a pastel peach highlighter in Bellini all over her face, to perfectly reflect the rays of the sun as it set over the Fell’s Point pier.
